He started working for a Milwaukee shoe factory, and from there he owned his own Pizzeria.

He continued his education at Purdue University.
Because of his training in meteorology with the Royal Dutch Navy, Otto was offered a job with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.
Otto was the lead forecaster at the National Weather Service for 25 years.
