Green Mountain Hooked Rugs is a 5 generation family owned business. Although the business was founded in 1982 by Anne Ashworth, our roots go much further back in rug hooking. The timeline below shows our transformation over the years. 1927 - Philena Moxley Parker and her daughter, Minnie Parker Ashworth, demonstrate the use of the stamping blocks and create a hooked rug pattern for the Wenham, MA, Historical Society.
1973 - Pam (Ashworth) Kirk founded and sold her first rug hooking pattern business called New Earth Designs. 1982 - Green Mountain Rug School was co-founded by Anne Ashworth and Jean Armstrong. The school was held at Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center, Vermont from 1982-2014 when it was moved to Montpelier, Vermont by Anne's granddaughters.
1983 - Stephanie Ashworth began repairing rugs for the business and continues to this day. 1999 - Stephanie Ashworth Krauss opened a retail store called Green Mountain Hooked Rugs, located in a small, third-floor space in Montpelier, Vermont.

Stephanie Allen-Krauss of Montpelier, Vermont, was only six when she learned to hook from her mother, Anne Ashworth, a nationally recognized rug-hooking teacher.
This family tradition began with Stephanie's great-grandmother, Philena Moxley, who created and stamped embroidery and rug patterns at her shop in Lowell, Massachusetts from 1865 to1882.
As a fourth generation rug hooker, Stephanie took happily to the craft, learning to dye wool fabric as a teenager and then to repair antique hooked rugs in her early twenties.

I have so many stories from Green Mountain that I could write a booklet.
Maybe a whole book.
Everything from sanitizing the dorm room, to watching noodles appear in the bathrooms as the week rolled along, rain coming down the stairs into the "dungeon", someone yelling the sun is shining and running upstairs to find it gone, thinking we were seeing cows grazing up on the hill only to come to realize they were gravestones!
That one really had me and Jennifer laughing.
What were we thinking.
Thanks, H.E. We really miss seeing all of the wonderful friends we've met through the years!
